John Peter Stang & Maria Doetzel

(this is the family that my husband and children are descended from!)

Mr. John Peter Stang was born in Volmer, Russia on June 13, 1878.  He was the son of Joseph Stang and Magdalena Gartner.  Mrs. John Peter Stang, Mary Doetzel was born in Volmer in 1889.  I think her parents were Johannes Peter Doetzel and Elizabeth (Stang).  I am looking for the dates of the parents.

The Original Settlers List, dated July 18, 1766, lists a Stang family  coming from Gernsheim, Germany which has been disputed by Rosemary Larsen. She says that the Russian version of the Original Settlers List has his origin as Koenigheim, Tauberbischsheim, Kurmainz.

According to the Volmer Original Settlers List Sebastian Stang (36), was a Catholic farmer who came to Volmer (Vollmer)  with his wife Anna Maria (25), and daughter Walpurgia(2).

There is a lot of interest in this Stang family and many people are researching it.  We are lucky to be able to find some much information about the Volmer Stangs as they have preserved their genealogy very well.  There are many books that are rich with information, but there is also a lot of assumptions being made about who Sebastian’s father and sibling may have been.  It is thought that another Stang family that is found in the Yagodnaya Polyana (YP) Colony are related to Sebastian.  I have spoken with the Village Coordinator for YP and we agree that there is no concrete evidence to prove or disprove a blood relationship between the colonies.

The Stang family must have liked living in Volmer a lot because as far as what is recorded in the 1834 and the 1850  Volmer Census none of the male Stang family members left the Volmer Colony until after 1850.

Alternate Spellings:  Stang, Stange, Schtang, Schtank

Family Name In Russia: Штанг

Volmer - Kopenka

According to the AHSGR website the Stang families came from the following locations:

A. Stang FN{Sebastian}: said by the Volmer FSL to be fromUC Gernsheim, Kurmainz. Rosemary Larsen says that the Russian version of the FSL had this place as Kinisem but in fact his origin was in Koenigheim, Tauberbischsheim, Kurmainz.

B. StangFN said, by the Stumpp version of the Jagodnaja Poljana FSL, to be from UC Wallernhausen/Wallershausen, Buedingen, Hesse. ...

C. and by the Pleve version to be from UC Wallernhausen, Nidda, Darmstadt. According to the Buedingen ML, this man was from UC Wallernhausen and married in 1766 a Siebert woman fromUC Unter Lays (Mai&Marquardt#718).

D. Stang FN: said by the Ernestinendorf FSL to be from UC Wallernhausen, [Isenburg-]Budedingen.

It is not unreasonable to me to believe that all three Stang families could have been related given the locations of all of their listed origins.
